TUALATIN, Ore. — A Washington County sheriff's deputy was shot and critically injured Wednesday morning while serving an eviction at an apartment complex in Tualatin, the sheriff's office said.

The accused shooter is dead, the sheriff’s office said later that afternoon. It is not immediately clear how the suspect died.

The incident started at about 9:30 a.m. when the Washington County Sheriff's Office was serving a civil eviction at the Forest Rim Apartments.

At about 10:20 a.m., deputies said they were fighting with someone inside the apartment. Seconds later, there was gunfire.

One of the deputies was shot several times. The deputy was flown to a trauma center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in a Life Flight helicopter ambulance. He's listed in critical but stable condition.

At least one deputy returned fire.

The sheriff's office has not publicly identified the wounded deputy, but Sheriff Pat Garrett said staff at Legacy Emanuel is doing everything they can to help him.

“He is an incredible person,” said Garrett. “He is a complete professional. He is compassionate. He is also resilient and tenacious.”

Law enforcement officers from several local departments rushed to the scene and helped evacuate the apartment complex.

At about 12:50 p.m., the suspect was found dead inside of an apartment.

Nyberg Street was closed from Southwest 65th to Interstate 5. The road reopened after 1 p.m.

KATU News has confirmed that some nearby businesses, including some in the Nyberg Woods Shopping Center went into lockdown procedures.
