PEARL RIVER, La. (WVUE) - A Colorado woman was injured and arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving while impaired after a single-vehicle crash killed one of her passengers and injured three others early Sunday (Jan. 14) near Pearl River, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
The agency said 25-year-old Kendall Morris of Westminster, Colo., will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center upon her discharge from a hospital. Morris will be booked with vehicular homicide, driving while impaired, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and three counts of first-degree negligent injuring, the sheriff’s office said.
According to the STPSO, Morris was driving a Honda Pilot with four passengers on Archie Singletary Road near Louisiana Hwy. 36 when she failed to negotiate a curve around 12:15 a.m. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, ejecting a male passenger who sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The victim’s age and identity have not been disclosed.
Morris and three other passengers were taken by ambulance for hospital treatment of “various injuries,” the sheriff’s office said. Two of the passengers already have been treated and released, the agency said.
Authorities have not detailed the basis for the impairment allegation against Morris, but a statement from Sheriff Randy Smith indicated alcohol was involved.
“If you plan to drink, plan ahead and have a designated driver or call a rideshare company,” Smith said in the statement. “As a last resort, if you find yourself impaired with no ride, call us at (985) 898-2338 and we will assist in getting you a ride home.”
